XAE -- XQuery processing using XML algebra

Public

Recently, XML has been emerging as the latest in database technology, embraced by many large corporations. However, before this project, there was not an XML query engine exploiting query optimizing techniques. By using an XML algebra, we could apply already-established optimizing methods from relational databases to this new technology. We implemented a basic algebra data structure and query executor. Additionally, we describe the process of Schema Cleanup which deletes unnecessary nodes from the query tree, and eliminates unnecessary columns from internal tables. These extra steps can arise from the fact that multiple trees are merged.
