Analysis of a Lower Limb Prosthesis

The Center for International Rehabilitation (CIR) has created a monolimb, which is a lower limb prosthesis for developing countries where the socket and shank are molded from a single piece of thermoplastic material. This study analyzed circular and elliptical cross sectional shapes to determine which combination of parameters contributed to lower overall von Mises stresses while providing some flexibility of the shank. Finite Element Analyses were performed in COSMOSWorks to determine which shape was most appropriate for CIR. The results demonstrated that both increasing the diameter and rib length of circular shanks decreased the values for von Mises stresses and displacement.
