open in viewerStrokes are a major cause of death and disability in the US, with ischemic strokes being the most common. This Major Qualifying Project's (MQP) goal was to create a device that can detect disrupted blood flow in the carotid artery, which is an indication of plaque build-up that can lead to ischemic strokes. Based on the previous team’s research, our team developed a pump, neck model, and arteries in a closed-loop system to test various sensors. Through testing on the model, we found a suitable method for detecting plaque buildup. The team’s most promising results came from testing with piezoelectric sensors encased in silicone housing.
