Design of an in vitro system for the evaluation of biodegration

A potential non-invasive means for evaluating wound healing in vivo was investigated by characterizing the in-vitro bio-degradation of collagen sponges using MRI. Attempts to correlate measured MRI parameters with different degrees of collagen crosslinking were unsuccessful. Sodium alginate gels were also examined as a function of cross-linking (with Ca 2+) for alginate solutions of varying concentrations (0.18, 0.27, and 0.36M). The MRI-measured transverse relaxation rates and proton densities varied approximately linearly over this range of alginate concentrations.
