An interactive tool for designing atom guides

In the observation of the first Bose-Einstein condensate, researchers in the field of atom optics have found the gateway both to a fundamental understanding of how ultracold atoms interact and to the staggering technological potential of the ultracold atom. The construction of an atom guide, a tool to direct the path of atoms, is an essential step to advance research in atom optics and to harness the power of ultracold atoms for technological applications. One type of atom guide is the atom wire waveguide, which guides atoms through a tunnel-like region of low magnetic potential, using a configuration of current-carrying wires and permanent magnets. The testing of new designs for atom wire waveguides is tedious and time consuming, because of the complexity of the magnetic fields and the difficulty of experimental prototyping. This report details the development of an interactive software tool for facilitating the rapid creation and testing of new designs for atom wire waveguides.
