open in viewerIschemic strokes, caused by the blockage of blood flow to the brain, are a life-threatening and debilitating issue to almost 800,000 people in the US each year (CDC Stroke Facts). It is important to identify blockages in patients before the clot dislodges and leads to a stroke. This Major Qualifying Project (MQP) conducted research, ideation, design, prototyping, iterations, and analysis to set the foundation for a working sensor, placed on the surface of the neck to detect blood clots, to be created by subsequent teams. This project focused on building replicas of the human neck, including an artery model, creating a peristaltic pump to simulate blood flow, and testing potential sensor options. However, this paper will only focus on work relevant to creating the carotid artery model.
