Investigation of the mechanical properties of connective tissue using small-angle light scattering

Public

SALS is a method for acquiring data about the properties of biological tissues. The goals of our MQP were to design a mechanical apparatus to load samples of connective tissue and to use SALS data to characterize the physical properties of connective tissue. Analysis of the data led to the determination of an average fiber diameter of 5 um and 8.5 um for the loaded and unloaded samples, respectively. Microscopic examination was performed to validate the SALS data and to visualize the crimping phenomena.
