The Effects of Latency and Jitter on a First Person Shooter: Team Fortress 2
PublicThis paper describes the effects of latency and jitter on the enjoyment and performance of playing the online multiplayer first person shooter game Team Fortress 2. We ran a study to measure the performance of the player and the enjoyment of the game under various latency and jitter conditions. We analyzed data gathered from the game and questionnaires to find correlations for player performance or enjoyment at latency and high jitter versus just high latency. Our results suggest that higher latency makes a difference in gameplay, but there is no correlation for players performing better or worse with latency and jitter compared to just high latency.
