Molten metal delivery

The goal of this project was to evaluate and improve the process of molten metal delivery in a die casting facility. An area company, Kennedy Die Castings, has had problems with the delivery of molten metal to individual die cast machines. The project group was to examine the present system and make improvements to any area that could cause production loss. The outcome of the project was a newly designed alerting system that would calculate the volume of metal being used by an individual machine. This permitted visual lighting fixtures to be designed and implemented on the production floor, which would allow for the production managers, machine operators, and metal handlers to visually see the level of molten metal in the individual machines without having to look into each furnace crucible. Also within the scope of this project, was to redesign a central melting area so that it incorporated another piece of machinery that is significant to the delivery process, a molten metal de-gasser. It is hoped that the metal being delivered to the individual die cast machines is 100% clean at all times. A replica of the central melting area was designed utilizing Pro-Engineer, which showed the new layout of the production floor with the appropriate machinery incorporated.
