Study abroad programs are a form of educational tourism that have the ability to foster peaceful relations between the students and the destination. Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s (WPI) Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) is a 7 week study abroad program that places students in project centers across the world. The team analyzed 30 previous IQP reports from the Greece Project Center, using the Institute for Economics and Peace’s (IEP) Positive Pillars of Peace as a framework to develop criteria to evaluate how the IQP program promotes peace. The team conducted 80 interviews with current and alumni IQP students, and their sponsors. We determined the importance of forming relationships, involved sponsors, and cultural immersion in promoting peace in Thessaloniki.
