Droplet injection in a supersonic flow

The disruption of liquid droplets, due to velocity shear in a compressible gas flow, was examined through the use of a computational model. An experimental investigation was then conducted to determine the accuracy of the model. Water droplets with a diameter of 50 micrometer and 80 micrometer, created using a 30 micrometer drop-on-demand dispenser, were injected longitudinally into a small, minimum-length, Mach 2 wind tunnel. Shadowgraph images illustrate the computational model gives a reasonable approximation of the actual disruption time.
