Semi-Autonomous Vehicle to Reclaim Derelict Fishing Nets from Ocean Garbage Patches

open in viewerNylon fishing nets account for approximately 46% of the plastic debris found in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) by mass. Four times more harmful than all other forms of plastic pollution, derelict fishing nets create significant environmental consequences. Successful recovery of Nylon fishing nets from ocean garbage patches requires a unique solution: the proposed SOLIDWORKS design is a semi-autonomous, catamaran-like vehicle which can effectively identify, shred, and collect Nylon fishing nets. This project precedes the design, fabrication, and testing of a small-scale, physical prototype in future MQP work for the 2022-2023 academic year and beyond.
