Optimization of a circularly polarized dual-feed patch antenna on a nano-satellite platform

Two designs for both a dual-feed single-band circularly polarized patch antenna at 437 MHz and a single-feed linearly polarized patch antenna at 146 MHz were researched. These antennas were to be mounted on a metal platform or nano-satellite. The software chosen to simulate the antennas was ANSOFT HFSS v.9.0. This software allows accurate simulations to optimize the antenna beamwidth, the return loss and the axial ratio. From the simulations, the parameters and physical attributes of the antennas such as patch size, feed location, and antenna shape were ascertained. As a result of the simulations, the antenna designs were physically assembled and tested with WPI's network analyzer and equipment utilized at Hanscom Air Force Base at Ipswitch. All data collected from the antennas has been used in Powdered Metallurgical And Navigational Satellite (PANSA7).
