The Harris' checkerspot butterfly, Chlosyne harrisii, uses the flat-topped aster, a plant that grows in wet meadows, as a host plant for its entire life cycle. My research included a mark-recapture study to determine whether the organisms at Wachusett Meadows Massachusetts Audubon Society display metapopulation characteristics based on their numbers and movements between fields. In addition, the data suggest that females chose plants for oviposition that had significantly larger stem diameter, height, leaf number and bushiness than the general population.
