The residents of Klong Toey,an informal settlement in Bangkok, are living illegally on land owned by the Port Authority of Thailand and face relocation. The Duang Prateep Foundation, an NGO, sought strategies to assist residents through relocation. We worked in a cross-cultural team of 3 American and 4 Thai students to produce a portfolio of strategies that recognize the shared interest of all stakeholders. In 7 weeks we identified residents' opinions in this politically charged setting through 8 focus groups and 70 interviews. Coupling these findings with literature on failed and successful relocations led to strategies that preserve community, jobs and education while avoiding failures such as interrupted schooling, mass unemployment, or residents reoccupying Klong Toey.
