In an attempt to optimize the production of type 1 collagen fibers, for use as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) replacement scaffolds, our research team designated and constructed an automated device to mechanically extrude uniform collagen microthreads. Using principles of engineering design, we created an automated system consisting of: a fiber anchoring system, double-walled water bath and a bi-axial belt driven extrusion vehicle. The design of this device will aid in the rapid production of collagen microthreads for future research of an ACL replacement scaffold.
