Myocardial ischemic factors

Public

Short periods of ischemia have been shown to protect the heart during future, prolonged ischemic episodes. To isolate factors involved in ischemic preconditioning, New Zealand white rabbit hearts were subjected to episodes of ischemia. The rabbit jejunum was used to assay HPLC fractions of heart effluent. Three factors affecting contractile activity were found: Fraction I, a depressive factor identified as adenosine; Fraction 2, a depressive factor thought to be Met-Enkephalin; and Fraction 3, an excitatory factor suspected to be PGE.
