The role of Flt3/Flk2 in B cell development

Flt3/Flk2, a receptor tyrosine kinase that is implicated in leukemia, also has an important role in hematopoietic development. This role seems to be most important in the formation of early B cells, evidenced by the observations that this gene is expressed in early B cell progenitors and down-regulated as development progresses and that flk2 gene knockout mice display reduced numbers of B cell progenitors. Thus, the goal of this project is to develop a system in which the gene's biochemical and developmental effects can be studied through reintroducing mutant versions of the gene into doubly deficient (Flt2-/-KitW/Wv) mice using a retroviral vector.
