Stem cell research is a major source of both controversy and promise. The goal of this paper will be to provide an introduction to this complex topic. Stem cells are not all alike, and each type has different ethical considerations. Adult stem cells (ASCs) have been medically used for decades and have fewer ethical considerations than embryonic stem (ES) cells. My analysis shows 3 of the 5 major world religions believe that life begins before the day-5 embryo stage at which ES cells are obtained, and such embryos should not be destroyed. My analysis also shows that both ASCs and ES cells are capable of providing viable medical treatments. With such incredible potential, research regarding these cells will affect politics, litigation, moral views, and therefore society in general.
