The effects of space weather on earth-orbiting satellites
PublicIntensified activity in the near-Earth space environment caused by the eleven-year solar cycle, such as geomagnetic storms, high-energy particles, and trapped radiation, causes serious problems for orbiting artificial satellites. These satellites serve vital functions in our highly technological society. This IQP explores aspects of the space environment and their effects on satellite operations. The societal importance of satellites is examined, as well as specific cases of satellite failures due to space weather. Solutions to problems affecting satellites due to space weather are also discussed.
