Meniere's disease is a disorder of the inner ear marked by recurrent attacks of dizziness, tinnitus, and deafness. Recent studies indicate that an increase in activity of the inducible form of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) accompanies this disorder. The purpose of this study was to determine whether inhibition of iNOS is sufficient to preserve hearing in a guinea pig model of this disease. The results showed that although over time both treated and untreated animals lost hearing to some degree (p<.001), the iNOS-inhibited animals experienced a lesser degree of hearing loss than the control (p<.001).
