open in viewerAcupuncture as a therapeutic intervention is widely practiced in the United States. While there have been many studies of its potential usefulness, its grounds are scientifically weak. The situation is further complicated with the use of control, such as placebo effect and sham acupuncture. Although promising results have emerged and further research is likely to uncover additional areas where acupuncture can be useful, most healthcare providers take a relatively cautious approach to alternative care. While it costs less than conventional treatment and two out of three Americans now uses alternative medicine, the pharmaceutical and insurance industries are among the very top political contributors who resist getting alternative medical therapies covered by insurance.
