Extra Ears is a synchronous subtitle system designed to assist the deaf and hard-of-hearing in movie theaters. The system utilizes a server-client architecture, where a server application running on a desktop computer serves subtitle data to multiple mobile devices running a custom mobile application. The desktop application is built using JavaFX, while the mobile application is built using React Native. The server is multithreaded to ensure optimal performance for all components of the system. The mobile application connects to the server using the socket.io-client library, and the subtitle display is created using the react-native-video and react-native-subtitles packages. The system is designed to be easy to use for both theater administrators and users, with features such as QR code generation and scanning for device connection, and intuitive navigation controls for the mobile application. Overall, the Extra Ears system provides a seamless and accessible solution for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals to enjoy movie theater experiences.
