Post-Mortem Pb Detection in Birds

One objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of the LeadCare174 System in testing the lead (Pb) content of post-mortem body fluids in birds. Birds brought to the Tufts Wildlife Clinic that died or were euthanized were frozen then thawed before necropsy. Post-mortem fluid tests were comparable to pre-mortem blood samples. Another objective was to compile the Pb levels of all patients tested from 2002-2006. Elevated Pb levels were detected in species not typically associated with Pb exposure.
