Detection of JPEG/MPEG standard encoding algorithms

This project is aimed at analyzing JPEG (Joint Photographics Experts Group) and MPEG (Motion Pictures Experts Group) algorithms used in video hardware and software encoding and decoding. The basic premise for doing so is twofold: testing for adherence to JPEG/MPEG standards, and concurrently to test for intellectual property infringement on the hardware or software being tested. The strategy is to test various algorithms involved with the Discrete Cosine Transform (the heart of JPEG/MPEG algorithms) on multimedia files varying in size or format. The testing will be done using a variety of encoding and decoding software and hardware packages. The overall goal is the determination of the ability to pinpoint what specific algorithm was used in an encoding process by relying solely on examination of the resultant output (given the original input). This would in turn bring us closer to determining whether there was any infringement on intellectual property. The current project status is that algorithm detection was achieved with certain limitations.
