Supersonic combustion
PublicThe goal of this project was to design, build, and test a small-scale supersonic combustor. After studying various fuels, acetylene was chosen because of its broad flammability limits, short ignition time and low auto-ignition temperature. A convergent-divergent nozzle designed by the Foelsch method accelerates the air stream to Mach 1.7. A premixed air/acetylene flame was ignited with a spark in a piloting-chamber. The two systems, nozzle and piloting chamber, were successfully tested.
