Autism, Anxiety, & Socially Assistive Robots

Public

The Penguin for Autism Behavioral Intervention (PABI) robot was created to assist children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in developing social and communication skills through learning activities. This project focused on extending the robot’s capabilities to identify and relieve feelings of stress. As a preliminary test of this technology, the researchers conducted an experimental study with the PABI robot on college students and found that it had similar effects on decreasing users’ stress levels as traditional mindfulness practices.
